Biography:
Dr. Liao graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China with a Bachelor’s Degree majoring in theoretical physics in July 2006. He received his first Ph. D degree in Physics from the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science in November 2011. He came to the U.S. in January 2010 as a dual degree student and started his graduate study in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University (LSU) and received his second Ph. D degree at LSU in December 2012. He subsequently stayed at the University of Twente (2013-2016) and Oak Ridge National Lab (2016-2018) as a postdoctoral researcher. In 2018, Dr. Liao joined the USTC as a faculty member. Dr. Liao’s research interest is in exploring novel properties and functionalities of complex oxide heterostructures by the effects of broken symmetry, reduced dimensionality, and by controlling lattice and electronic reconstruction at the interface. Dr. Liao published numerous scientific papers in influential journals including Nature Materials, Nature Communications, PNAS, and Nano Letters.

1) Correlated oxide heterostructures and X-ray spectra
2) Oxide nanoelectronics
What You Can Expect in the Project:
In this project, students are expected to learn the basics of oxide interfaces and electronic devices. At the same time, students will be involved in using synchrotron beamlines to characterize the thin film.
