Biography:
Dr. Liu got his B.S. degree in Astrophysics from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and his Ph.D. degree in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the supervision of Prof. Franz Himpsel. Afterward he got the ALS Postdoctoral Fellowship from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and focused his research on the battery materials by in-situ synchrotron X-ray spectroscopy and scattering techniques. In 2013, he became a full professor in Shanghai Institute of Microsystem & Information Technology, Chinese Academy of Science, in charge of “SiPME2”, a Giant Scientific Instrumentation Project funded by the NSFC to build two spectroscopy beamlines at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF). In 2020, Prof. Liu joined National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory of USTC and is acting as the Executive Deputy General Director and Deputy Chief Engineer of Hefei Advanced Light Facility (HALF), a cutting-edge 4th generation synchrotron light source being under construction from 2023-2028.
Research Interest:
1) Synchrotron radiation X-ray techniques and instrumentation.
2) Electronic structure of energy conversion and storage materials.

In this project, students are expected to learn the basics of synchrotron radiation spectroscopy, synthesis & characterization of battery materials.
