Biography:
Dr. Zhu earned his B.S. and Ph. D. degrees from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2012 and 2018. He subsequently worked at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory as an Associated Research Physicist (2018-2020) and Staff Research Physicist (2020-2022). In 2022, Dr. Zhu joined the School of Nuclear Science and Technology at USTC as a faculty member. Dr. Zhu is mainly working on magnetic confinement fusion, particularly the design and optimization of stellarators. Dr. Zhu published numerous scientific papers in influential journals including Physical Review Letters, Nuclear Fusion, etc.
Research Interest:
1) Optimize magnetic fields to better confine plasmas for fusion energy.
2) Find simpler and cheaper solutions producing desired magnetic fields.
What You Can Expect in the Project:
In this project, students are expected to learn the basics of plasma physics and magnetic confinement fusion. They will gain hands-on experience using computer codes to design nuclear fusion devices and/or conducting experiments with high-temperature superconducting tapes.
