International Summer Research Program
Special Session for Japanese Partners

Program Outline

The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is proud to organize an extended session of the 2025 USTC FuSEP International Summer Research Program which is specially tailored for our Japanese partners. The Program will take place from August 25th to September 21st, 2025, to provide outstanding students from our Japanese partner universities with a transformative summer training experience. Participants will have the opportunity to work with USTC’s world-leading laboratories, cutting-edge research facilities, and top-tier research teams to tackle global challenges.
The program will be conducted in English.

Program Duration and Venue

  • Dates: August 25th to September 21st, 2025 (4 weeks)
  • Location: Hefei, Anhui, China

Research Projects

USTC will offer over 100 research projects supervised by Principal Investigators (PIs) across various disciplines, including:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry and Materials Science
  • Earth and Space Sciences
  • Life Sciences and Medicine
  • Mathematics
  • Computer Science and Technology
  • Engineering Sciences
  • Social Science

If the listed projects do not align with their interests, students may search for other potential supervisors HERE. They are required to contact USTC PIs individually and obtain a Provisional Acceptance before submitting their application online.

Fees, Scholarships and Benefits

  •  USTC Scholarship: Admitted students will be awarded the USTC Fellowship in accordance with USTC’s funding policy. This Scholarship covers registration fees, tuition, research training, and pre-arranged on-campus housing when they participate the Program.
  • USTC Fellowship: A select group of outstanding participants will receive the USTC Fellowship, which includes a travel grant and on-campus meal plans.
  • Priority for Future Degree Programs: students who have finished the Program will be given priority consideration for scholarships if they apply to USTC degree programs in the future.

Application Eligibility

  • Full-time registered undergraduate or graduate students at our Japanese partner universities during the Program period.
  • Completion of at least 2 years of undergraduate studies in a relevant major by the Program start date.
  • Exceptional academic record with demonstrated potential and passion for research.
  • Proficiency in English (equivalent to B2 level or above).

Application and Nomination Procedure

Step 1: Fill Out the Online Application Form
Applicants must complete the online application form (click APPLY NOW, choose the program of “Special Session for Japanese Partners”) and specify up to two (2) USTC PIs and projects in order of preference.

Step 2: Submit Supporting Documentation

Applicants are required to prepare and submit the following documents:

  • Resume: You can only upload one file, please name it as “Given name+ Family name+. CV”., maximum 20MB.
  • Personal statement: Explain your academic background, interests, and qualifications for joining the selected research project(s).
  • Latest academic transcript issued by the home institution: You can only upload one file, please name it as “Given name+ Family name+. GPA”., maximum 20MB, .pdf format is supported.
  • One recommendation letter from a PI at the Japanese partner university: You can only upload one file, please name it as “Given name+ Family name+. RL”., maximum 20MB.
  • Provisional Acceptance Form from a USTC PI (only required if the proposed supervisor is not listed on the Project & Supervisor page; click to download the form).
  • Proof of English language proficiency (B2 level or above).
  • A copy of the passport photo page: Please upload the bio-data page of your passport. Your passport must be valid for another six months before you depart for China. Please name it as “Given name+ Family name+. Passport”. You can only upload one file, maximum 20MB.

Application Deadline: Sunday, April 13th, 2025

Step 3: Nomination from Partner University

USTC will forward the application packages to the designated contact person at each Japanese partner university for nomination.
